Багамские острова, Содружество Багамских Островов Государство в Вест-Индии, на Багамских островах. 13.9 тыс. кв. км. Население 266 тыс. человек (1993), св. 80% – багамцы. Городское население 64% (1990). Официальный язык – английский. Большинство верующих – протестанты. Столица – Нассо (Нассау). Входит в Содружество. Глава государства – королева Великобритании, представленная генерал-губернатором. Законодательный орган – двухпалатный парламент. Поверхность равнинная. Климат тропический, пассатный. В древности на островах жили индейцы. В 1492 острова открыты испанцами. С 1783 колония Великобритании. В 1964 получили внутреннее самоуправление. С июля 1973 независимое государство.
